Research Fellow – Climate Investment in Europe Programme

Your mission

You will join the Europe programme at the Institute for Climate Economics (I4CE), contributing to research projects that bring decisive evidence to the European public policy debate. Your focus will be on the further development of I4CE’s work on EU climate investment and on the flagship EU Climate Investment Deficit report.

About I4CE

The Institute for Climate Economics (I4CE) is a non-profit research institute that contributes through its analyses to the debate on public policies for mitigation of and adaptation to climate change.

 

We promote effective, efficient, and fair policies. Our 40 experts collaborate with governments, local authorities, the European Union, international financial institutions, civil society organizations, and the media. Our work covers three transitions – energy, agriculture, and forests – and six economic challenges: investment, public financing, development financing, financial regulation, carbon pricing, and carbon certification.

 

I4CE is a registered non-profit organisation, founded by the French national promotional public bank Caisse des Dépôts and the French Development Agency (AFD).

 

The development of I4CE in the European sphere is one of I4CE‘s strategic priorities.  Founded in 2022, the Europe program is currently a team of four researchers.

The role 

The position will support the production and development of the EU Climate Investment Deficit report. Under the supervision of the lead manager of this project, the research fellow will carry out the following tasks:

 

  • Collecting quantitative and qualitative data relating to EU climate investments, by applying or improving the methods used in the report. Data collection includes monitoring, documentary research (database, reports, statistical studies, articles) and interviews with targeted experts;
  • Contributing to the methodological development of the study by proposing new methods for documenting climate investments and estimating climate investment needs, extending it to new sectors, or connecting the results with the European climate debate in Brussels and in EU Member States;
  • Operating the system for processing quantitative and qualitative data, from collection to presentation in the form of charts, tables, infographics, or reports;
  • Contributing to the drafting of research reports and summaries, and to the development of presentation materials, as well as the wider promotion of the study;
  • Providing occasional assistance to I4CE‘s other work in the production of briefing notes, case studies or reports.

 

Professional profile  

This position is intended for young professionals with a Master’s degree and 1-3 years of experience in the field of economics, engineering, political sciences, environment or similar with a strong interest in the political, economic, and financial issues related to climate change.

 

Prior knowledge is desirable in at least one of the following areas:

  • Climate and energy policies at EU level;
  • Technologies and organisation of the energy system;
  • Climate or environmental economics;
  • Public finance;
  • Financial instruments and investment financing.

 

Knowledge of statistical methods and tools would also be appreciated.

 

The position requires:

  • Excellent personal work organisation skills and strong attention to detail;
  • Rigour in gathering and processing information;
  • Strong interpersonal skills, ensuring clear communication and transparency in methods;
  • Good ability to organise meetings and conduct interviews with experts or field professionals;
  • A high level of proficiency in Excel.

 

Required language skills:

  • Professional proficiency in written and spoken English (C2);
  • Written and spoken knowledge of French (B1/B2);
  • Knowledge of other European languages is a plus.

Start date:As soon as possible and no later than January 2025

Location: I4CE offices are located at 30 rue de Fleurus – 75006 Paris. Tele-working is possible to some extent.
